General
Suitable for viewing by persons of all ages. Occasional violence, swearing and coarse language, and the most innocent of sexually suggestive scenes and nudity are permitted in this category.

PG
Parental guidance advised. Theme or content may not be suitable for all children although there is no age restriction. Motion pictures in this category may contain less subtle sexually suggestive scenes and nudity and a more realistic portrayal of violence than in the General category; coarse language may occur more often than in the General category.

14a
Suitable for persons 14 years of age or older. Persons under 14 years of age must view these motion pictures accompanied by an adult. Motion pictures in this category may contain violence, coarse language or sexually suggestive scenes.

18a
Persons under 18 years of age must view these motion pictures accompanied by an adult. Motion pictures in this category will contain horror, explicit violence, frequent coarse language or scenes that are more sexually suggestive than in the 14A category.

Restricted
Restricted to persons 18 years of age and over. Persons under 18 years of age are not permitted to attend under any circumstances. These motion pictures are "adult motion pictures", as defined in the Act, and may contain explicit sexual scenes, violence or scenes referred to in section 5 (3) of the Act. The director will assign this classification to motion pictures if the director considers that the theme, subject matter or plot of the adult motion picture is artistic, historical, political, educational or scientific.

Adult
Restricted to persons 18 years of age and over. Persons under 18 years of age are not permitted to attend under any circumstances. These motion pictures are "adult motion pictures", as defined in the Act, and may contain explicit sexual scenes or scenes of brutality or torture to persons or animals, that are portrayed in a realistic and explicit manner; however, the scenes would, in the director's opinion, be tolerable to the community.

Ontario Film Review Board Ratings

Family
Film appropriate for viewing by a person of any age. Occasional use of words such as darn, damn or Hell. Restrained portrayals of limited violence which may result in extremely limited bloodletting. Casual, non-sexual nudity with no close-ups. Limited embracing, kissing in a loving context. There may be brief moments of mild horror in comedic, historic or fantasy settings (for example, dragons, giants, wicked witches). Be sensitive to treatments of scenes or situations related to a child's sense of security and well-being.

Parental Guidance
Parents should exercise discretion in permitting a child to view the film. Occasional use of stronger expletives and/or slurs; mild sexual references. Restrained protrayals of non-graphic violence, integral to the plot. The portrayals are not prolonged; there are no close-ups; bloodletting and/or tissue damage is limited. Brief nudity in a non-sexual context, non-explotive close-up. Embracing, kissing in a loving context; mild sexual innuendo. Exciting horror scenes and some grotesque images may be allowed in a fantasy context, but there will be no detailed and/or prolonged focus on gory images and suffering. Be sensitive to treatments of scenes and situations that may cause adverse psychological impact on children. THese may include frightening or emotionally upsetting situations involving threats, injury, illness, family problems or death to young people, family members, and animals (particularly pets).

Adult Accompaniment
Film restricted to persons 14 years of age or older or to persons younger than 14 years of age who are accompanied by an adult. Course language and/or slurs directed to specific segements of society; sexual references. Portayals of violence resulting in bloodletting and/or tissue damage which may or may not be fatal. Violence should be within the context of the film. Full frontal nudity, non-detailed brief, casual non-close up in a non-sexual situation. Kissing, petting, fondling, implied sexual activity, limited instances of brief, non-gratuitous simulated sexual activty; sexual innuendo. Gory or grotesgue imagery may be more frequent or detailed, but will generally avoid prolonged focus. The treatment of scenes and situations will tend to be more frightening, intense, disturbing, or emotionally upsetting than would be allowed in the PG classification. More mature themes can be portrayed. Threats with some abusive dialogue may be considered.

Restricted
Film restricted to persons 18 years of age or older. No language restrictions. Visually explicit portrayals of violence which may be characterized by any or all of extreme brutality, extreme bloodletting and extreme tissue damage. May include torture, horror or sexual violence. Full frontal nudity in a sexual situation. Simulated sexial activity; limited instances of brief, non-gratuitous, non-violent explicit sexual activity. Horrific themes, incidents and images with a more prolonged or graphic focus and greater friequency. The treatment of scenes and situations may cause extreme adverse psychological impact. Such scenes and situations could involve intense and compelling terror, acts of degradation, threats of violence and continuous acts of non-extreme violence. Such situations could be accompanied by coarse, abusive and degrading dialogue.
